Before beginning the research, construct a ‘Diamond 4 Door’ foldable.
Create a square from A4 paper, and cut off the excess paper.
Fold the square diagonally so the opposite corners touch and unfold to reveal an “X”.
Fold the corners of the square into the centre of the X.
Further instructions can be found at: How to make a 4 corner mini-book (Diamond 4 door fold)
On the outside top flap write the Topic heading “ENERGY”. On the bottom outside flap write out the LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY .
1. Research and identify at least 8 different types of energy, and think about how we use energy conversions (also called transformations) in everyday life. The following internet resources will be helpful:
What is Energy? Children’s University, Manchester. This site has a quiz and an energy transformation interactive.
Elastic and Gravitational Potential Energy converted to Kinetic energy, as shown in this classic Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner episode on YouTube.
You can download a Roller Coaster Animation, which portrays kinetic energy (KE), potential energy (PE), and total mechanical energy (TME) of the car as it moves along the track.
2. When you have finished, discuss the different types of energy and write beneath the topic heading, ‘There are many different types of ENERGY.”
3. On the remaining outside flaps write definitions of KINETIC and POTENTIAL energy. These definitions may slightly differ, discuss if necessary.
4. Using the internal folds, identify different types of energy, draw an example and describe an energy transformation, eg. ELECTRICAL ENERGY is converted by a DOOR BELL into SOUND ENERGY. Note that definitions may differ slightly.
